Consecration to Our Lady

This short prayer of consecration to Our Lady is widely spread in Catholic devotion, especially in Brazil. Although its authorship is sometimes attributed to Saint Alphonsus Liguori, its exact origin is debated. The faithful pray it to entrust themselves entirely to the maternal protection and guidance of the Virgin Mary.

O my Lady and my Mother, I offer myself entirely to you, and in proof of my devotion to you, I consecrate to you this day and forever, my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, and my entire being. And because I am thus yours, O incomparable Mother, keep me and defend me as your property and possession. Amen.

Origin

This prayer of consecration to Our Lady is one of the most popular in Marian devotion, especially in Portuguese-speaking countries. While not directly attributed to a specific author or a formal date of composition, it reflects the spirit of total consecration to Mary, popularized by Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort. It is frequently recited in Marian shrines, after the Rosary, or during moments of personal devotion, as an act of surrender and trust in the protection of the Virgin Mary. Its current form is widely disseminated in popular piety.
